When Getting Blood Work For Cholesterol Check, Can They Find Other Things Like Std’s Or Hiv?

Do they do specific tests that only find what they’re looking for? Or while doing blood work checking cholesterol, could they possible find something else?

  1. If your doctor ordered a cholesterol test–that is what the lab will check. They cannot test for other tests like std’s or hiv without your doctor first ordering it.
If you would like those tests run, then discuss it with your doctor. He will need to write an order.
    So, the answer is NO.

Well it depends on the doctor. If it’s your PCP, more than likely s/he can order an HIV test as well. You must sign a release for HIV testing though. Depending on the scope of practice of the physician other tests could be ordered.

  3. The lab technicians will check for the things that have been ordered by the doctors. If a request is made to check for certain diseases, then the tests will be performed. If the doc just requests a check for cholesterol, then thats all that will be checked.

  4. Medical laboratories don’t normally do any testing that the doctor hasn’t ask for. Each laboratory test takes time to do and costs money. And it would be a waste of resources to do testing that the doctor didn’t ask for.
Sometimes the laboratory can do additional testing on a sample that has been taken earlier, if the doctor asks for additional tests. But this is not always possible. Because various tests often require the blood sample to be taken in different containers that affect the blood sample in different ways. And a blood sample taken for one test is not always suitable for another test. A new blood sample quite often needs to be drawn, when the doctor asks for additional testing.

  5. They are able to check for STD’s and HIV’s at the same time, but will only do that if they are ordered by your doctor. Labs will only check for the specific test that are ordered.

  6. yes they can they can also find any drugs that you have consumed

  7. If the test ordered is a cholesterol check, the lab will only check for that with a specific test or assay.

  8. No – HIV testing requires different tubes and different testing than a cholesterol test. Your doctor also has to order this specifically if you want it to be done, you cannot request extra tests be done on your blood. There is only syphilis that can be obtained from a blood sample and this is not tested for either unless your doctor orders it; the rest of the STD’s come from cultures from a vagina or penis. They will not “find” anything but your cholesterol levels.
