If you didn’t sign a contract that guaranteed the health of your puppy, including cardiac, I’m afraid there isn’t anything you can do.

yes you can have their kennel shut down, which is what needs to happen. because they are breeding unhealthy dogs.

You will get no resolution from the AKC. The AKC is a record keeping organization. The AKC does not guarantee a healthy dog. Now, if you have a contract with the breeder, stating a guarantee against any congenital defects for a certain period of time in the dogs life, say 2 years, you would have a leg to stand on in a court of law. It sounds like you got your pup from a BYB. She may have had any # of dogs in her pedigree that died of Cardiomyopathy at a young age. If she did, she sure as heck wouldn’t share that info with you because she would never be able to sell a dog if she did. I really don’t think you will get very far with this breeder. I feel for you. We have an adopted female Bulldog that originally came from a Mennonite puppy mill. She has severe HD along with many other issues. I do wish you well with your pup. It sounds like you are going to be in for a long hall, just as we have for 5 years now.

Unless you have a signed contract with the breeder that guarantees against congenital illness.. there’s nothing you can do.
AKC will not resolve any issue.. they are a registration service. If you have a signed contract and the breeder is refusing to follow up on her end of the guarantee, you can report her to AKC and she can have her registrations suspended.. but that’s all AKC will do.
Registration is no guarantee of quality. Unless you have a signed contract that guarantees the health of the dog, you are out of luck.

AKC won’t resolve your issue. They will tell you that it is up to you to ask the breeder if the parents were screened for cardiac issues. It IS up to you. That is why educating yourself before buying a puppy is so so so so so important!
Take a look at your contract if you have one. Is there some sort of health guarantee? If not, there is nothing you can do. It is a hard lesson to learn, but next time you’ll know to ask more questions before purchasing a puppy.

I do not know if you can get help from the AKC but it would be worth A try. Also in some places they have passed A (dog Lemon law) if you are in one of the places that has that law then the breeder will have to ether give you another puppy or refund up to 3 times the perches price or cover all the medical expenses. So you might want to look in to that as well.

All the AKC is is a registry for purebred dogs, it doesn’t police breeders. Look at your contract that you signed with the breeder that you got the puppy from and talk to an attorney about this. The laws vary from state to state governing laws on breeders and about buying a dog from a breeder.

Just because th dog is AKC, does NOT mean that the puppy will be healthy. It is VERY likely that you purchased your puppy from a Back Yard Breeder. Where did you get the dog? How much did you spend? Did the parents of the dog have clearances? These are questions you should always be sure to know.

Sounds like you bought it from a backyard breeder. You really have no recourse. The AKC does not govern these matters; “registered” does not mean “well bred.”
I’m really sorry about your dog. This is why so many of us oppose backyard breeders.
