How Can A 21 Year Old Lower Their Cholesterol?

my best friend (who is 21) was just told that her cholesterol is way too high! She is given three months to lower it before they will consider medication. She isn’t sure how to go about lowering her cholesterol besides working out. What foods should she stay away from or what foods should she eat more of? Any advice would be great!

  1. An easy way to start off on the right track is to cut out breads, pastas, rice, and refined sugars (or eat them in moderation).
Eat plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits – cut out any acid-forming foods such as alcohol and coffee.
    Hope this helps your friend!

  2. Eating oatmeal (the real stuff, not the microwave slush) every day for a month is supposed to draw cholesterol out of the body.
Eating salmon and other fish (not shellfish) heps, because it alters the balance of bad to good cholesterol.
Cut out the butter or cut it wayyy down. Use olive oil or canola oil rather than other oils. Cut fried foods completely out, at least for the month, chips and other greasy snacks, too.
Working out, or just walking for half an hour or more (three miles, if she really wants to work at it) a day also alters the balance from bad to good cholesterol. I suppose any cardio, like running, biking, swimming will work. I know, she already knows about exercise, but the point is, do something that keeps going for an extended period of time, not something that stops and starts, like volleyball.

  3. Your friend should reduce or eliminate foods high in animal fat such as meat, eggs, and dairy products and try a vegetarian diet which consists of at least six servings of whole grain foods, four servings of green leafy vegetables, two to three servings of fruit, two to four servings of legumes, and one serving of non-fat dairy products daily.
She should do regular exercise such as fast walking, jogging, swimming, bicycling and walking up stairs. A good option is aerobic exercise (20-30 minutes) at least three times a week.
In addition, she can try these home remedies to lower her cholesterol:
Mix 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar, 1/2 cup grape juice and 2 cups apple juice and drink daily.
Boil 5 pieces of cinnamon sticks in 3 teacups of water. Add a tablespoon of honey.

  4. Avoid fats specially red meat fats. Egg yokes are also cholesterol contributors. Organ meats are high in cholesterol. Cheese… pastries.
    And exercise, exercise, exercise…

  5. She needs to eat more vegetables and stay away from or limit red meats and saturated and trans fats. Her doctor should have given her a diet to follow, if not she should be able to find one on line.

  6. Cut out the red meat, dairy products, fried foods. Eat more fish for good cholesterol.

  7. Eat oat meal in the mornings!
