Can Anyone Suggest Treatment For Congenital Heart Disease With Atrial Septial Defect For A Man Aged 39?

one of my friends had been detected with this disease in 1994 and when we consulted the surgeon at that time he had said that the chances of success in surgery are very few as he is so old(he said if it had been detected in childhood chances would have been good)and as such declined from doing it. so it would be a great help if anyone would assist me with risk involved as well as assist me with any new technology which has come forth to solve this problem.please give me any details of hospitals in india which would help me in completetly in solving the problem either by surgery or any other method with less risk.

  1. A congenital heart defect is a problem with the structure of the heart. It is present at birth. Congenital heart defects are the most common type of major birth defect.
A baby’s heart begins to develop shortly after conception. During development, structural defects can occur. These defects can involve the walls of the heart, the valves of the heart and the arteries and veins near the heart. Congenital heart defects can disrupt the normal flow of blood through the heart. The blood flow can
    Slow down
Go in the wrong direction or to the wrong place
    Be blocked completely
Treatment for the defect can include medicines, surgery and other medical procedures and heart transplants. The treatment depends on the type and severity of the defect and a child’s age, size and general health. Today, many children born with complex heart defects grow to adulthood and lead productive lives.http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/dci/Dise…

  2. Hi there !
Get the “second opinion” from a senior cardiac surgeon ! Why dont you contact cardio-thoracic department of Apollo Main hospital, Chennai ?
    best wishes !

  3. I would suggest you search for a pediatric cardiologist in India. An adult cardiologist would not have the most recent information. Closing an Atrial Septal Defect in an adult can be done in the U.S. with a catheter procedure rather than open heart surgery. It is not a terribly difficult procedure unless your friend has other health issues which complicate the issue.

  4. pulmonary hypertension is the main problem to overcome. there are new techniques of anaesthesia using nitric oxide which help to decrease the risk. the umbrella treatment should also work. most corporate hospitals will be able to do such treatment. free treatment may be possible at Satya Sai Baba’s hospital near Bangalore.
